Rajasthan is five cities and the space between them
The cities get the photographs. Jaipur's pink facades, Udaipur on its lake, the blue quarter under Mehrangarh, the gold of Jaisalmer rising out of nothing. They are all genuinely worth the journey.
But the state's character is in the driving. The road from Jodhpur toward Jaisalmer thins out until the villages are an hour apart and the land stops pretending to be farmland. That is when Rajasthan stops being a series of forts and becomes a desert kingdom that had to be defended — which is the only way any of those forts make sense.
So the mistake is not choosing the wrong cities. It is scheduling the drives as dead time between them, to be done as fast as possible, ideally asleep.
